An agent, not a chatbot

The difference in one sentence: a chatbot tells you how to book a flight, an agent finds it and prepares the booking. Hermes works with tools: it reaches your email, calendar, notes and business systems, and given a goal it executes the steps on its own. The other big difference is memory: it retains every conversation in searchable form, and from a short character file (the "soul") it knows who you are, what your company does and how you like to work. Why is deployment fast?

Three reasons. First: installation is a single terminal command, and the agent can run on an existing company machine with no extra infrastructure, keeping data in-house. Second: Hermes is model-agnostic. The brain behind it is freely swappable, existing ChatGPT or Grok subscriptions connect with a simple sign-in, and through a routing service nearly every model on the market is available, including cheap ones built for high-volume work. You only call the expensive flagship where it is genuinely needed. Third: integrations connect gradually, permission by permission, and a single hook-up takes minutes.

With background tasks it works several threads at once, and with the goal function it does not answer once but iterates until the defined outcome is done. For bigger research it spins up sub-agents: it splits the subtasks across cheap models, runs them in parallel and synthesises the result. It can even be proactive: in its overnight "dreaming" it reviews your full history and comes back with suggestions for the next day's work.

What to watch out for

The golden rule of agent systems is the principle of least access: with every integration, the agent only receives the operations it genuinely needs. Have it prepare emails as drafts and keep sending behind human approval. API keys never go into the conversation, they live in environment variables, and access can be restricted to specific users. Context hygiene matters too: one conversation, one topic, and unused connections only make the system slower and more expensive. And responsibility stays human: the agent prepares, proposes and executes, but signing off on critical decisions is yours.
